Are you a high school student interested in the Blue Economy?

The Blue (ocean & water-related) Economy is enormous and growing with good paying blue- and white-collar jobs.

Do you want to find out what careers there are with merchant marine, marine science, ocean technology, and more? Do you want to learn skills for 21st century jobs in the Blue Economy?   Do you want to experience interactive learning? If so, join this great, free program.

Spend 3 days this summer learning about opportunities across the Blue Economy in San Diego and globally!

Through a number of strategic partnerships and programs, TMA BlueTech has organized and supported various international events to increase exports from small and medium sized ocean & water companies throughout the United States.  Our programs include the U.S Maritime Technology Export Initiative (USMTEI) trade shows and WEFTEC participation.

About the Program

Be part of the leading U.S. BlueTech cluster

Learn about the history and importance of San Diego’s maritime industry at The Maritime Museum of San Diego. Climb a jib, row, and learn navigation skills on actual ships.

Get insight on professional maritime training for U.S. Coast Guard, US. Navy, etc. at Training Resources Maritime Institute. Experience safety gear, drive a boat in the simulation room and much more.

Learn from SDSU marine science students at the Coastal and Marine Institute, experience ROVs and drones, or have a tour at SeaWorld.  Day 3 experiences vary each week.

Before you arrive

What to bring

  • Completed waiver

  • Sack lunch (that does not require refrigeration) + water bottle

  • Notebook + writing instrument

Parking

The program is held at a different location each day and has distinct parking instructions for each location. Please download a copy of the full agenda for detailed instructions.

What to wear

  • Close-toed shoes

  • Light jacket

  • Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen for Monday & Wednesday programs

Skills learned

During this program, students will be introduced to the fields of marine biology and ecology, merchant marines, ship captains, and other Blue Economy careers.  Be prepared to be active. This is not your typical classroom setting.  You will be rowing, climbing, putting on gear, and using equipment.
